Artist's statement
I work with drawing, animation and video, with a particular interest in technical processes. I'm motivated by the meditative experience that the long and repetitive act of making my work provides.
I make drawings using a code. The code is the same, though the drawings are different - each drawing has the same underlying rhythm, though the rules that conform to that rhythm are different. The code itself isn't important, but it's personal to me.
I make drawings in other ways as well. I'm interested in mechanical drawing techniques, and in carrying out algorithms based on the mechanics of the particular process. The processes that I use are labour intensive and longwinded, and I enjoy losing myself in them. I like the suspense of waiting to see what the result will be, though I'm usually disappointed when I finish.
Sometimes I take the processes that I develop with drawing into animation. The concept is usually simplified and the result is usually purer. I like the relative smoothness of the animations compared to the drawings.
I make animations and videos in other ways as well. I'm interested in repetition and abstraction, and in processing information to a degree where it becomes meaningless and surreal.
I don't like processes that are too clean. I prefer to use manual techniques that are imperfect and readable - the inevitable mistakes and inaccuracies that occur reveal something of the journey involved; hand drawn lines act as a record of physical movements that my body has made.
I try to create an aesthetic that is in some way intrinsic to the process that I'm using, though I'm not under the illusion that I can be impartial. I'm interested in the space between my original intention and what actually occurs. I like the functional aesthetics of conceptual / post minimalist art from the 1960s / 70s, and how they have dated - how the language of impartiality changes over time and with new technology.
I studied BA (hons) Fine Art (Media) at Bath School of Art and Design from 2002 to 2005. |
