Rachel Anderson Karaoke revolutions #1 I take this very seriously… too seriously I’m interested in a grass roots approach to changing society. This is our world; it shouldn’t belong to the rich people at the top, what can we do? Everything is overwhelming, no one can do this on their own; we need each other. I’m a woman, that shouldn’t mean anything but it does… where shall we begin? We have a lot of work to do… in solidarity let’s move forward
I often draw on literature and song for an alternate view of the everyday; pasts told in folk songs which challenge the history books that guide us at school. Education is at the heart of my work whether this is a process of educating, being educated or challenging accepted forms of education I am currently making works which are developed around notions of utopian ideas about revolution and freedom; Processes of solidarity and infiltration in order to overthrow a system from within for the greater good. I am referring not to the current situations of violence and terrorism but to the peace campers at Faslane and the organised left, to those who work within a system which contains them with the belief that they can bring about change. Regularly my work refers to the mass media and I am currently developing a project which aims to deliver a mass infiltration of local radio phone-ins. I’m a member of two collectives ‘Unmotivated (or I am exactly what I dislike about the world at the moment)’ which works with historical notions of protest and the ‘Lambeth Band of Solidarity’ a group of people who find ways to explore the practice of solidarity in Lambeth and the world beyond. www.unmotivated.info
Biography A confused product of Thatcher’s Britain and activist parents Rachel first realised she was unmotivated whilst writing her dissertation appropriately titled ‘Unmotivated (or I am exactly what I dislike about the world at the moment)’ this revelation happened as she ‘again’ walked past Canterbury’s regular homeless faces to spend change she couldn’t spare on beer she didn’t need. After leaving University she moved to Hackney and became manager of a Youth Project on the Queensbridge Estate in Dalston, here she had the misfortune of saying goodbye to the few remaining youth workers left in the world before Connexions turned them all into “pa’s” and struggled to keep the project afloat until eventually through lack of money, support, interest or care it collapsed. However, during this time a few like minded individuals and good friends did come together to form UNMOTIVATED. No longer just a state of mind, this group decided to take on the task of empowering, enabling and inspiring action in others and what better opportunity came along for them to begin than Blair’s invasion of Iraq. Rachel now operates her artistic practice under the name UNMOTIVATED, working collaboratively with artists, drama practitioners, activists, writers and in partnership with other organisations. In the last year these partnerships have included; MSDM–Protest Academy, CND (campaign for nuclear disarmament), Green futures (Glastonbury), London Feminist Network, GLA, Sheffield Hallam University, Curzon Cinema, and Scary Little Girls theatre company. UNMOTIVATED’s main goal for next year is to work towards starting a Revolution. |
